Tigers move up in polls after 10-1 start

After three weekend series and three series wins, Clemson continued its upward track in the college baseball polls this week.

Monte Lee’s Tigers (10-1) are up to No. 12 in the D1Baseball.com poll, where they started the season unranked.

Baseball America moved Clemson to No. 10 last week and kept it there after the weekend. The top 17-ranked teams in the BA poll all posted winning weekends.

Chris Williams improved his team-leading RBI total to 16 over the weekend, boasting three homers and a team-best .357 batting average and four doubles. Drew Wharton holds the edge in homers (4) with 14 RBIs. Patrick Cromwell (.351) and Robert Jolly (.343) are both hitting well over .300 through 11 games.

Clemson has had a number of bullpen standouts in the early weeks of the season, with four hurlers sporting sub-2.00 ERAs with four appearances or more in LHP Ryan Miller (4 app./1.29 ERA/1 save), LHP Mat Clark (5 app./0.00 ERA), RHP Ryley Gilliam (5 app./1.29 ERA) and RHP Carson Spiers (6 app./1.50 ERA).

After a no-decision Friday, sophomore left-hander Jacob Hennessy improved his ERA to a starting-staff-best 1.69. Coming off of his shortest outing this season, sophomore left-hander Jake Higginbotham holds a 2.08 ERA with 13 strikeouts to two walks. Junior RHP Brooks Crawford is 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA and 12 strikeouts to three walks.

Clemson plays a pair of midweek games this week, starting with Wofford on Tuesday (6:30 p.m.; 219 RPI) and then Michigan State at Fluor Field in Greenville on Wednesday (7 p.m.; 188 RPI). Georgia Tech comes to Doug Kingsmore Stadium on the weekend (8-3; RPI of 17).
