Swinney says TE will redshirt this season

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held his weekly press conference and discussed several topics on his team including a meeting he had recently with tight end Garrett Williams.

Williams and Swinney agreed that the former 4-star tight end should redshirt this season after still battling back from his torn ACL injury.

'Garrett and I met yesterday," Swinney said. "It is what he wants to do and I support it. We are going to try to redshirt him if we can and see if we can get this year back. It's really a win-win. I really left it up to him at this point. I definitely think he could come back and help us, but it is also a win to know that we will have him for another year two years from now. I think he has a lot more development in him."

"I love Garrett. He is tough as they come and he is one of the most committed guys I have."

Swinney said "a disaster we would revisit that" decision if they needed Williams later in the season.

Williams suffered the knee injury during a spring practice and did not play in the April 8 Spring Game.

The native of Orlando, Fla., has two receptions for 21 yards and has played 252 career plays from scrimmage, plus many others on special teams. He has had a major impact on Clemson’s ground game the last two years.
