Swinney message to Syracuse locker room: ‘This is about you guys’

by - Staff Writer -

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney visited the Syracuse locker room Friday night shortly after his team’s 27-24 loss.

His message? The result was more about what Syracuse accomplished and not how Clemson came up short.

“You could hear them celebrating,” Swinney said of how close the locker rooms are at the Carrier Dome. “I’m happy for those guys and I wanted Dino to know that this isn’t about Clemson. This is about you guys. I’m happy for him. He’s trying to build a program. I have a lot of respect for him. You’re trying to build a program and that was a big win. They flat out out-played us and I didn’t want it be that didn’t Clemson play well.

“They freaking whipped our butts and out-coached us and that should be the story. It wasn’t that big of a deal (the locker room visit) and I don’t know how people even find out that stuff.”

How the visit was publicized was by how impressed the Syracuse players were by the gesture.

“That's one of the classiest things I've seen in my life," linebacker Zaire Franklin said to ESPN's David Hale. "To have been knocked down like that and have the humility to come talk to us, that was cool as hell."
