Swinney "fired up" about White House visit |
The tradition of sports champions visiting the White House dates back to 1865, when then-President Andrew Johnson welcomed the Brooklyn Atlantics and Washington Nationals amateur baseball clubs.
That tradition lives on, and many fans have been wondering if the current College Football Playoff Champions would get an invite to Donald Trump's White House. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney told Mark Packer of College Sports Today on Friday that his Clemson football team is close to having a date for their trip to meet the President. "I hope so. We’re waiting. I think there are a couple of days that are pending, but they’re waiting to work all of that out," Swinney told Packer. "Absolutely. I don’t care who’s in the White House. An opportunity to visit the White House is a special privilege. Put all of the political stuff aside, this is a unique experience for everyone involved." Swinney visited the White House as a member of Alabama's title team in 1992. "I got a chance to do it when I was a player in 1992. We went to the White House and Bill Clinton had just been elected. What a neat experience that was," Swinney said, "We went to the Capitol. We got to see the White House in a way that very few people get to see it. It was a great experience." He then said there was little doubt he wanted his team to have the same experience, and he can't wait for the trip to happen. "Absolutely, we’re going to provide our team and staff that opportunity. If somebody doesn’t want to go, don’t go, but I’m going," he said. "I’m fired up about it. I can’t wait to take the Clemson Tigers to D.C. as the national champions."
