Swinney discusses possible redshirt for TE

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney spoke to reporters during his weekly press conference on Tuesday and shared that junior tight end Garrett Williams could be a candidate for a redshirt season as he continues to battle back from his torn ACL injury he suffered during the spring.

"I think we are actually going to ease him back into some scout work this week," Swinney said. "He is actually doing great. I watched him last week spend a whole practice driving a sled with a big ole heavy tire on it all the way across the turf field, all the way back, all the way across, all the way back. He actually looks really good. Really we just need to get him back into the flow of football and football movements. We really want to work him into the scout team because you don't want to take away reps from guys that we know we got to get ready to play this week, but we need to get him in some full-speed football type work this week and next week."

Swinney and the coaching staff have not made the decision yet if he will redshirt.

"We will probably decide on him coming out of that open date. We could still redshirt him," Swinney said. "That's still an option on the table, but we are just not really ready to make a decision right now. He looks really good."

Over the last two seasons, Williams has played in all 30 Clemson games, 28 of which have resulted in victories. The native of Orlando, Fla., has two receptions for 21 yards and has played 252 career plays from scrimmage, plus many others on special teams. He has had a significant impact on Clemson's ground game the last two years.
