Swinney discusses his relationship with Spurrier

by - Assoc. Editor -

Is Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and Steve Spurrier really friends?

It's the truth. They are such good friends that Steve Spurrier invited Swinney and his wife Kathleen as his guests in December for the College Football Hall of Fame ceremonies in New York City.

"He's invited me to his HOF dinner in a couple weeks. That ought to be a lot of fun," Swinney said. "It's good (their relationship). I see him three or four times a year. He will reach out to me from time to time. Very respectful. We are both competitors. He kind of went about his business a little different than maybe I do but we had our moments. No doubt about it. We had some moments along the way, but I have always had great respect for him as a coach. He's one of the best. That's why he is going to the HOF. Good relationship."

Swinney was officially 2-5 against Spurrier during his time with the Gamecocks. However, Swinney wasn't able to count the 37-32 Clemson win in 2015 over South Carolina because Spurrier jumped ship midseason right into coaching retirement.
