Swinney awarded 'Coach's Call of the Week' |
Clemson coach
Dabo Swinney's fourth quarter, fourth down call in Clemson's 27-23 comeback win over Syracuse was voted
as the best coaching decision of the week by USA TODAY.
The No. 4 Tigers faced a 23-20 deficit with under three minutes to go and a fourth-and-one on Syracuse's side of the 50. A Travis Etienne run would pick up the needed yardage, but not before a false start moved things back to fourth-and-six. Armed with a couple timeouts, Swinney and company chose to trust redshirt freshman quarterback Chase Brice, who had already helped lead the drive from the Tigers' 6 to that point. The rest is the history as Brice connected with receiver Tee Higgins downfield and took a keeper deep into Orange territory before an Etienne game-winning touchdown rush. Other finalists included Michigan's Jim Harbaugh from his Wolverines' 20-17 win at Northwestern, Notre Dame's Brian Kelly in a home top-10 victory over Stanford and Florida's Dan Mullen after a win in a return to Mississippi State.
