Spurrier (L) says Clemson should be ranked No. 1

Former South Carolina, Duke and Florida head coach Steve Spurrier has had nothing but good things to say about head coach Dabo Swinney and the Clemson program since he retired from coaching, and that continued Wednesday when he said Clemson should be ranked number one in the nation.

Spurrier was a guest on Mark Packer’s Off Campus show on Sirius/XM Wednesday afternoon, and he said that Clemson’s win over Louisville last weekend was impressive.

“I’ll tell you what, if I was voting on the top 10, Clemson has got to be No. 1,” Spurrier told Packer. “To me, they should vote on what you see right now instead of, ‘Well, Alabama is supposed to be.‘ They are a super team, but for what we see right now, I think Clemson deserves to be No. 1. Sometimes when you look in the media guide, they say, ‘Well, how many weeks were you No. 1 in the country?’ So, it’s something to brag about. To me, the voters should do it on what they see every week. It could change from week-to-week, but it’s just my opinion. Clemson should be No. 1.”

Clemson is ranked second nationally – behind Alabama – and faces another ACC contest this weekend when they host Boston College. The Tigers are 3-0 after wins over Kent St., Auburn and Louisville, and Spurrier says he thinks they might be better than the team that won the National Championship last season.

“The way they look right now, they look a little better than last year’s team,” Spurrier said. “The quarterback (Kelly Bryant), he’s an excellent runner and a pretty good passer, also. I thought they would really miss Deshaun Watson, but they haven’t yet. Maybe down the road when they have to throw to win a game, we’ll find out. It’s early in the season, but right now they look awfully strong. They’ve got a lot of tough games left.”

Spurrier is set to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December as a coach, and one of the first people he invited was Swinney.

Spurrier asked Swinney and his wife Kathleen earlier this summer to join him and his wife, Jerri, for the event as they celebrate Spurrier becoming just the fourth person to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.

“Dabo and I get along wonderfully well. His wife and my wife - when we’re at some of these events like the Chick-fil-A golf event - we spend a lot of time with Dabo and Kathleen," Spurrier said. "I actually pull for Clemson occasionally, which most South Carolina people do not, because of Dabo. He does a super job there and I really like him."
