Smotherman named Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

Clemson, SC—Adam Smotherman, most recently an assistant director of strength and conditioning at Furman University, has been named an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Clemson University. Clemson Strength and Conditioning Coach Joey Batson made the announcement on Friday.

“Adam will work primarily with the defensive line ,” said Batson, who also came to Clemson after working at Furman. “ He has great energy, passion and enthusiasm for this program. He is an excellent young strength coach with outstanding credentials.”

Smotherman worked at Furman for this past academic year where he oversaw the strength and conditioning responsibilities for 13 of Furman’s 16 varsity sports.

Smotherman worked at Clemson for the 2011-12 academic year as a graduate assistant under Batson at Clemson. He worked with the football team that year, specifically with the defensive line and linebackers. Clemson won the ACC Championship that year.

Prior to that he worked as a volunteer/intern coach in the strength and conditioning facility at Vanderbilt, his alma mater. He worked under former Clemson assistant strength and conditioning coach John Sisk.

Smotherman was the captain of Vanderbilt’s football team in 2010 and was a three-year starter for former head coach Bobby Johnson, a Clemson graduate. Smotherman was defensive tackle from 2008-10 and was a starter on a Vanderbilt team that won the 2008 Music City Bowl. He made the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2010-11.

Smotherman received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education and history from Vanderbilt in May of 2011. He is currently working on a Master of Science degree in Youth Development Leadership at Clemson.
