Six Tigers drafted in 2016 MLB Draft

CLEMSON, S.C. - Four current Tigers and one Clemson signee were chosen on the final day of the MLB draft on Saturday. Junior infielder Eli White (Easley, S.C.) was selected in the 11th round (No. 322 overall) by the Athletics, junior infielder Weston Wilson (High Point, N.C.) was chosen in the 17th round (No. 501 overall) by the Brewers, senior righthander Clate Schmidt (Acworth, Ga.) was picked in the 20th round (No. 595 overall) by the Tigers and junior lefty Pat Krall (Downingtown, Pa.) was drafted in the 28th round (No. 856 overall) by the Cardinals.

White, Wilson, Schmidt and Krall joined second-round pick Chris Okey (Reds) and 10th-round selection Alex Bostic (Giants) as the six current Tigers drafted in 2016. Clemson's six draft picks tied for 15th most in the nation and tied for third most in the ACC.

White was one of the Tigers' hottest hitters in the latter stages of the 2016 season. He ended the year hitting .272 with 57 runs, 13 doubles, one triple, four homers, 30 RBIs, a .389 slugging percentage and a team-high 24 steals in starting all 64 games at shortstop. It was the third time White was drafted, including 2015, when he was a 37th-round pick by the Pirates.

Wilson, who started 63 of the Tigers' 64 games at second base in 2016, hit .279 with 50 runs, 12 doubles, three triples, seven homers, 45 RBIs and eight steals along with a .966 fielding percentage. Wilson became the first Tiger drafted by the Brewers since 1995 (Jason Dawsey).

Schmidt was 8-5 with a 4.83 ERA and 68 strikeouts against 21 walks in 85.2 innings pitched over 18 appearances (15 starts) in 2016. In his four-year career at Clemson, he totaled 18 wins and 178 strikeouts in 259.1 innings pitched over 72 appearances (40 starts). He became the first Tiger drafted by the Tigers since 2006 (Adrian Casanova).

Krall was a third-team All-American and Second-Team All-ACC selection as a reliever in 2016. He became the first Tiger in history to lead the team outright in wins (10) and saves (5) in one season. Krall was 10-2 with a 1.67 ERA and .203 opponents' batting average along with 65 strikeouts against 17 walks in 80.2 innings pitched over 29 appearances (three starts).

Tiger signee and infielder Logan Davidson (Charlotte, N.C.), son of former Clemson and MLB player Mark Davidson (1982), was drafted in the 30th round by the Phillies. Davidson joined infielder Carter Kieboom (Marietta, Ga.), brother of former Tiger Spencer Kieboom (2010-12) who was drafted in the first round by the Nationals, and righthander Travis MacGregor (Tarpon Springs, Fla.), who was taken in the second round by the Pirates, as Clemson signees selected in the draft.
