Report: Rockets in talks with McDaniels on mid-level exception

by - Assoc. Editor -

The Houston Rockets are in talks with offering their mid-level exception to former Clemson standout K.J. McDaniels according to multiple reports.

A mid-level exception is worth an estimated $5,464,000 per year. Other wing players on the Rockets' roster includes Trevor Ariza, Corey Brewer and Sam Dekker.

Former Rockets power forward Josh Smith agreed to a contract for $2.5 million with the Los Angeles Clippers over the weekend that should ensure him more playing time with the Clippers.

The Rockets still have a stockpile of power forwards with Motrezi Harrell, Terrence Jones and Donatas Motiejunas.

The team did not use their mid-level exception on Smith and it is currently still available.

One interesting Rockets' team salary note - veteran center Dwight Howard will make a $23,282,457 salary and franchise guard James Harden will earn a $16,784,032 salary for the upcoming season.

McDaniels finished the regular season averaging 7.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.1 blocks per game. He played in only 10 out of 29 games with the Rockets (including the postseason) and logged 33 total minutes (1.13 minutes per game) since the trade from Philadelphia.

He was a first-team All-ACC selection and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2013-14 while at Clemson. He led the Tigers in points (614), rebounds (255), blocks (100), steals (41) and three-pointers (42) - the only player in the country to lead his team in all five categories.
