Report: Rams expected to franchise tag Sammy Watkins

by - Assoc. Editor -

Sammy Watkins might be getting paid but not through free agency.

The Los Angeles Rams are expected to use their franchise tag to keep the former Clemson receiver according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.

Watkins contract for 2018, if he is franchised, should be around $16 million. That's not bad money if you can get it.

“You see this team building something, with the coaching staff and the players,” Watkins said to the Los Angeles Daily News. “It would be a pleasure to come back but, you know, it’s a business. I’m looking forward to talking to the coach and seeing where my future is at.”

The Buffalo Bills declined a previous $13.25 million option on him in 2016 which led to the trade with the Rams.

Watkins is still only 24-years old and should be headed for a nice 2018 season with a young talented quarterback Jared Goff throwing him the football.

In 2017, Watkins has 39 receptions for 593 yards and eight touchdowns (8th in NFL). During the 26-13 playoff loss to the Falcons, he caught only one pass of four targets for 23 yards.

For his NFL career, he has 192 catches for 3,052 yards and 25 scores.
