Report: Arkansas interested in Brent Venables |
It's coaching rumor season as teams are firing coaches left and right to get a head start on the 2018 college football season.
CBSSports.com released its latest article on Sunday afternoon stating that the powers to be in Arkansas are interested in Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables. "Influential members of the Arkansas brain trust are interested in Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables and Memphis coach Mike Norvell as candidates to fill the coaching vacancy with the Razorbacks," CBSSports.com said. "Arkansas fired Bret Bielema immediately following Friday's 48-45 loss to Missouri in Fayetteville. Sources tell CBS Sports that Venables impressed many people tied to Arkansas when he was in Little Rock, Arkansas, receiving the 2016 Broyles Award given to the nation's top assistant coach. His ability to consistently produce top-tier defenses in conjunction with Clemson's high-octane, no-huddle offense is a trait that would translate well to an Arkansas program that recognizes the need to be more innovative offensively after Bielema's more traditional approach never found sustained success." Clemson is currently No. 6 in the nation in scoring defense (283.3 ypg) under the tutelage of Venables. "“My focus and Brent’s focus are 100% on Miami. Nobody is sitting around worrying about any of that (rumor) stuff," Dabo Swinney responded during Sunday's media teleconference. It's great that Arkansas has interest in Clemson's standout defensive coordinator but I don't see Venables leaving Clemson with his family established in the Clemson area, getting blue-chip defensive recruits each season, being paid around 1.7 million per season, and his son Jake committed to play linebacker at Clemson in 2018. His other son Tyler that plays quarterback and safety at D.W. Daniel also holds an offer from Clemson.
