Wade Phillips is taking a leave of absence from the Houston Texans to have surgery to correct a kidney condition. Former Clemson defensive coordinator Reggie Herring will replace Phillips as coordinator.

From Houston Chronicle:

Linebackers coach Reggie Herring is the next man up for the Texans.

Herring, who is Wade Phillips’ right-hand man, will replace the defensive coordinator in the next two games against Carolina and Indianapolis.

“I’ve been raised under Wade for the last four years,” said Herring, who coached linebackers under Phillips with the Dallas Cowboys. “I’ve studied him. We think a lot alike.

“I’m not Wade Phillips, but it’s Wade Phillips’ system, his defense. It’s our calls. It’s what the players know. We have confidence. At the end of the day, it’s going to come down to execution and consistency. I feel very confident about this.”

Herring, a long-time defensive coordinator in college football — TCU, Clemson, North Carolina State and Arkansas — was the Texans’ linebackers coach in 2002-03 under Dom Capers.
