Playing time breakdown: Clemson football through seven games |
The final result wasn't the only oddity out of Clemson's game at Syracuse.
The rotation pared down considerably with an increase of snaps on one side of the ball and not many opportunities on the other. Through a mix of Syracuse’s offensive style, the defensive gameplan and struggles, and Clemson offense inefficiency, ten Clemson defenders played their highest snap totals of the season: Kendall Joseph (87), Trayvon Mullen (85), Ryan Carter (84), Austin Bryant (83), Dorian O’Daniel (83), Clelin Ferrell (81), Christian Wilkins (79), Tanner Muse (74), Van Smith (71), Dexter Lawrence (66). That group was on a seventh consecutive week playing, and of those defenders, seven played 30 or more snaps than the previous game with Wake Forest: Mullen (57), Carter (53), Bryant (47), Lawrence (36), O’Daniel (35), Joseph (33) and Ferrell (33). Because of those kinds of numbers, a number of regular contributors barely saw the field or didn’t play at all: RB C.J. Fuller (4 snaps), LB Tre Lamar (2), WR Cornell Powell (special teams-only), WR T.J. Chase (special teams-only), WR Tee Higgins (no snaps). The Clemson offense was limited to a maximum of 59 snaps, which accounted for the receiver corps’ limited opportunities. All nine scholarship contributors have seen some share of playing time most of the season, but even second-string targets Trevion Thompson (15), Amari Rodgers (5) and Diondre Overton (5) barely played. On the offensive line, the see-saw continued at right tackle with Treymayne Anchrum jumping over game-starter Sean Pollard this week, with nine more snaps (34-25) – a week after Pollard logged eight more snaps than Anchrum versus Wake Forest.
