Malzahn admits that rotating 3 QB's was a bad idea

by - Assoc. Editor -

Auburn head coach Guz Malzahn spoke with the media on Tuesday and admitted that rotating three quarterbacks wildly hurt his team's chances to win against #2 Clemson in the 19-13 loss on Saturday night.

“We thought it was a good plan,” Malzahn said about rotating quarterbacks. “Obviously, it wasn't. The change in and out (of quarterbacks), it hurt our tempo, obviously. That was the take on it.”

Malzahn played starter Sean White, backup Jeremy Johnson, and backup John Franklin III as he made quarterback substitutions at least 20 times throughout the game. The constant changes did not help his quarterbacks' confidence, establish any type of flow, and actually helped Clemson as Auburn quarterbacks ran in and out of the field which stalled Auburn's uptempo attack.

“Going into the first game, the plan was that we were going to throw a lot at them,” Malzahn said. “We felt like all three quarterbacks had some things they could be successful with. We were going to give them a lot to think about. We weren't able to execute or run the — we weren't as successful as I thought we would be with those (plans), but that was the plan.”

Malzahn threw the proverbial kitchen sink at Clemson offensively, but the plan came up short.
