'Great appreciation' to KC, Spiller 'ready to roll' when next chance comes

Former Clemson running back great C.J. Spiller’s 2017 – an eighth year around the NFL – has been odd, to say the least.

A snapshot of his season has seen more cuts from one team (4) than carries (2). The timeline: Signed by the Kansas City Chiefs, Feb. 24; Cut by the Chiefs, Sept. 2; Signed the Chiefs, Sept. 4; Cut by the Chiefs, Sept. 7; Signed by the Chiefs, Sept. 9; Cut by the Chiefs, Sept. 16; Signed by the Chiefs, Oct. 16; Two rushes for zero yards in an Oct. 19 game at Oakland; Cut by the Chiefs, Oct. 23.

Spiller signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs initially in February, but Spiller told Bleacher Report recently that he had no illusions that his path to the field would be easy.

After a strong preseason camp, Spiller seemed like a good bet to stick around the roster, but that’s far from how it turned out.

"It was a whirlwind," Spiller told B/R. "But every time, they were in constant communication with me and my agent. I know people on the outside were looking at it like it was crazy with the cuts and the signings, but they didn't know the background of it. I have a great appreciation for the Chiefs organization and how they've handled everything this season. They gave me an explanation every time they made a move."

In between call-ups to K.C., Spiller told B/R that he split time spending time with family and working out in Florida and South Carolina.

Spiller, a 2010 first-round pick with over 700 career carries and 12 touchdowns, says despite his experience so far this season, he’s ready to play whenever a team needs him.

"There's a lot of football left. When the call comes, I'll be ready to rock and roll," he said.

Spiller finished his time in Clemson second in NCAA history in all-purpose yards (7,588). In a 2009 ACC player of the year campaign, he posted an ACC record 2,680 all-purpose yards with 21 touchdowns.

He was drafted ninth overall by the Buffalo Bills in 2010, where he played up to 2014 with 3,321 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns. Since 2015, Spiller has played for the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks and then the Chiefs.
