Some unexpected news to report today.

The New York Jets announced on Sunday that kicker Chandler Catanzaro has decided to retire.

The 28-year-old missed two extra-points in the preseason opener against the New York Giants.

Catanzaro confirmed his retirement with the following comments on Facebook:

What a ride. God has blessed me far more than I deserve. When I finished my career at Clemson, playing in the NFL was just a dream. After five years in the league, it’s time to move on. I can’t say I ever thought I would’ve been a kicker, but I’m thankful that kicking chose me. I thank God for my ability every day, and I’m forever grateful for all the game of football has provided. I’ve been through the highest of highs, the lowest of lows, and everything in between. I’ve learned so much about myself and about life through the game of football. I have no regrets. I worked my tail off and gave my absolute best every time I stepped onto the field. What will remain, however, are the relationships I’ve built along the way. I want to wholeheartedly thank everyone for the prayers and encouragement along my journey. For my parents and my family for tirelessly supporting me and my dreams. For my wife Mieke for her unconditional love and support and reminding me what is most important in life. For all of my teammates. For the coaches and teammates who believed in me the most- you know who you are. It’s time for the next chapter of my life. The best is yet to come!

Before the Jets, 'Cat-Man' was with the Panthers last season after being released by the Buccaneers after a week ten loss (missed 2 FG) against Washington. He was 11-for-15 on field-goal attempts with the Bucs.

During his short time with the Panthers, he made all of his field goals and extra-point attempts. Combined for both teams, he was 16-for-20 on field goals last season.

The Clemson product spent the first four years of his career with the Cardinals before kicking for the Jets in 2017. He signed a three-year deal with Tampa Bay before the 2018 season.

For his NFL career, he converted on 83.8% of his field goals and 92.9% of his extra points.

He was a two-time semifinalist for the Groza Award and left Clemson first in school history in points, extra points made and field goals of 40-plus yards.
