Former Clemson QB injured against Patriots |
Former Clemson quarterback and backup Browns signal-caller Charlie Whitehurst filled in for an injured Cody Kessler and went a respectable 14-for-24 for 182 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the 33-13 loss to the Patriots.
Whitehurst left the game against the Patriots with a left knee injury but returned to the field late in the fourth quarter. He took X-rays after the game on his knee, but by all accounts, he just hyperextended his left knee and told reporters after the game that he thinks he will be okay. "I just landed on it and it went kind of straight," Whitehurst said via cleveland.com. "I hyperextended it and I was hoping it wasn't too serious." Browns quarterbacks Robert Griffin III [fractured shoulder], Josh McCown [broken collarbone] and Cody Kessler [rib injury] are all injured so Whitehurst might be the starter next week. The only other current healthy options would be wide receiver Terrelle Pryor or rookie quarterback Kevin Hogan on the practice squad. Whitehurst has played with several teams including the Chargers (2006-2009), (2012-2013), Tennessee (2014-2015), Indianapolis (2015), and Cleveland (2016-present). He also had a stint with the Seattle Seahawks (2010-2011). For his career, he has passed for 2,463 yards with 11 passing touchdowns and eight interceptions for a quarterback rating of 74.9. He was drafted out of Clemson by the Chargers in the third round (81st overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft after being a second-team All-ACC performer (2005).
