Deshaun Watson learning new Texans offense in comeback

by - Staff Writer -

Expect a different look from the Deshaun Watson-led Houston Texans offense in 2018.

Year two in the league for Watson will start to kickoff in organized team activities (OTAs) coming up, as the national-champ QB continues to be ahead of schedule in recovery for a torn ACL.

"We’re not in a rush on that," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said this week, "but I do think there’s going to be some things he can do throwing-wise, probably not in team drills, but maybe he can do some seven-on-seven, some of our passing drills to continue to work on the timing with the receivers, especially.

"...I know he’s champing at the bit to do it. I mean, he wants to be out there. He’s out there doing things with our trainers right now on the field, obviously with no pass rush or anything. So, I feel good about where he’s at and I do see him being able to do ... some things on the field.”

The mental game will be as key as anything for the 2017 All-Rookie Team QB, as O'Brien looks "to start from scratch" on offense this year.

"He really told me everybody saw what we did with Deshaun this past season," NFL Network's James Palmer said this week of a conversation with O'Brien. "They're changing things and it's not even completely put into place yet. They're still putting it all together.

"And he said the teaching portion of this is going to be the challenge because of Deshaun's specific skill set that is so different and so lethal at the same time. ... But they are changing things up dramatically on the offensive side of the ball."

Watson was tied for the league-lead in passing touchdowns before his injury (19), completing 61.8 percent of his throws for 1,699 yards with eight interceptions. On the ground, Watson rushed for 269 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 7.5 yards per carry.

Watson's total QBR efficiency (81.3) would have led the league over the season, ahead of qualified rankings of Carson Wentz (75.9), Case Keenum (69.7) and Tom Brady (67.4).

He earned AFC offensive player of the month for last October after passing for 1,171 yards, with 16 touchdowns to five interceptions.
