Colvin opts out of Marlins assignment

by - Assoc. Editor -

Former Clemson outfielder Tyler Colvin has opted out of his minor league assignment with the Marlins and will be a free agent according to multiple sources.

10-time All-Star and former MVP Ichiro Suzuki was signed as a fourth-outfielder recently and it was going to be tough for Colvin to crack the Marlins' lineup for many at-bats when he was recalled from the minors.

The Marlins have a young and talented outfield with Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and Giancarlo Stanton.

Colvin hit .223 in 139 at-bats with two homeruns in 57 games for the Giants in 2014. In 2012 with the Rockies, he hit .290 with 18 homeruns, 27 doubles, 10 triples and 72 runs in 136 games. For his career, he has a .239 average with 49 home runs and 178 RBI's.

He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs with the 13th overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft.

In 2006 with Clemson, Colvin batted .356 with 13 home runs, 70 RBI's and 23 stolen bases.
