Clemson to face Georgia State in NIT

by -

Clemson (20-12, 10-8 ACC) received a No. 3 seed in the NIT and will host No. 6 seed Georgia State (25-8) at Littlejohn on Tuesday, March 18. The game will be televised on ESPNU. It is the 15th all-time appearance in the NIT for the Tigers and the first since 2007 when that team advanced to the championship game in Madison Square Garden.

Georgia State, the regular season Sun Belt champions, is 0-4 all-time vs. Clemson, having last met in 2006-07. The Panthers won the regular season crown in the Sun Belt with a 17-1 record but lost its conference championship game Sunday in New Orleans, 82-81 to Louisiana Lafayette.

Georgia St. is led by led by Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year R.J. Hunter, who is averaging 18.4 points per game and Ryan Harrow - the former NC State and Kentucky point guard - who is averaging 17.3 points per game.

The winner of Clemson and Georgia State will play either No. 2 seed Illinois or No. 7 seed Boston U.

The NIT Tournament consists of 32 teams and the championship takes place in New York City at Madison Square Garden.

Florida State (19-13, 9-9 ACC) was one of four No.1 seeds along with SMU, St John's and Minnesota.

“This may have been the most challenging selection process we’ve had since I joined this committee in 2006,” said Carroll Williams, acting chair of the NIT Selection Committee. “In addition to the 13 institutions which automatically qualified for the NIT and the 19 that we selected with the at-large spots available, there were many others that were worthy of strong consideration into our field.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $4 for ages 13-18. Admission is free for youth 12 and Clemson students with a valid ID. All seating is general admission. Tickets ordered online and over the phone can be picked up at will-call or printed at home.

Back to Back Home Games

Clemson will also play at home in the second round of the NIT if they are able to beat Georgia State because Illinois's arena is under renovation, and Clemson is a higher seed than Boston. Clemson has a 9-3 record in Littlejohn Coliseum in the NIT, losing its first three games before compiling a nine-game winning streak in the event in the Tigers’ home arena.
