Clemson ranks in top-five in assistant salaries

by - Staff Writer -

Clemson football ranked third overall in assistant coach salaries this year, according to a USA TODAY database released Wednesday.

Alabama moved above last year’s No. 1-2 in LSU and Clemson respectively with nearly $6 million dedicated to assistants (5,995,000). The Bayou Bengals (5,915,000) and ACC Tigers (5,725,000) were not far behind.

Like in 2016, Brent Venables ranks second overall with a $1.7 million salary. He holds the sixth-best maximum bonus payout ($295K), which includes bumps of $50,000 for a top-10 relative total defense or total defense ranking and $100,000 with a top-five ranking in the stats, which are compiled by Sports Source Analytics.

LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda leads all assistant salaries at $1.8 million, and LSU’s offensive coordinator ranks fourth at $1.5 million. Last year, former LSU and current Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis earned the top salary at $1.5 million.

Behind Venables, Clemson co-offensive coordinators Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott ($800,000) check in at No. 29 overall.

Next-best to Clemson in the ACC in total assistant salaries was Jimbo Fisher’s former staff at Florida State, trailing the Tigers by more than a million ($4,691,000).
