Clemson Military Appreciation Week includes parade, medal presentations |
CLEMSON – Clemson University is celebrating its annual Military Appreciation Week culminating with multiple events Saturday as the Clemson Tigers host the Syracuse Orange in Memorial Stadium. Among the observances will be the awarding of Purple Hearts to two Upstate veterans before the game.
The planned events include: Friday, Nov. 4 The third annual Tigers for the Troops Golf Tournament will begin at noon at Boscobel Golf & Country Club. Proceeds support the Clemson Veterans Endowment, which will provide a $1,000 scholarship each year to a deserving veteran at Clemson. The cost for a team of four is $260, including brunch from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Interested teams should fill out the form at http://bit.ly/2ebTWjH. Saturday, Nov. 5 From 9 a.m. until kickoff, Army National Guard and vintage military equipment will be on display on Bowman Field. It will include an AH-1F Cobra helicopter painted like a tiger and a mini-C17 transport airplane courtesy of the 315thAirlift Wing. At 11:30 a.m., the Pershing Rifles will change the flag that’s been flown at the Scroll of Honor for the last year. At 2:30 p.m., veterans and local National Guard and Army Reserve units will join the Clemson Tigers Marching band, cheerleaders, ROTC and the Clemson Corps in the parade down Fort Hill Street to the stadium. Flyoverby A-10 Thunderbolt IIs assigned to the 74th Fighter Squadron from Moody Air Force Base S. Marine Lt. Gen. Glenn M. Walters will award purple hearts to Cpls. Travis Evans and Alex Chapman. Evans, who now is an Easley police officer, was wounded in 2010 in Marjeh, Afghanistan, by an improvised explosive device. This is his second Purple Heart. Chapman, who lives in Pacolet and attends USC-Union, was wounded by an IED in 2011 in Afghanistan. Derick Carver, an Army veteran who lost his leg in an IED blast in Afghanistan, will be recognized as The Hero of the Game during the first quarter, second timeout. Halftime ceremonies All veterans will be recognized on the field during halftime. The Clemson Rangers will perform a Fallen Soldier salute in the East End Zone. The Pershing Rifles will perform a 21-gun salute. The half time show will end with the playing of TAPS. Families of South Carolina service members or alumni will be recognized for the sacrifices they have made.
