Clemson, SC—Miller Capps finished in third place, tied for the best finish by a golfer in a tournament this year, leading Clemson to a third place team finish at the Wolfpack Spring Open on Sunday. The Tigers finished with a 582 total, seven shots behind 10th ranked Duke and five shots behind NC State.
The 13-team event was played at the 7358-yard Lonnie Poole Course in Raleigh. It was Clemson’s last tournament before beginning play at the ACC Tournament at The Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point, NC on Friday.
Capps had rounds of 67-73 for the 36-hole event, the only two-round tournament on the Clemson schedule this year. The 140 total was four-under par and just three shots behind champion Albin Choi of NC State, currently the number-four player in the nation. Capps’s 67 in the first round was his career best, and his third place finish was his career best. He also finished third at the Jerry Pate Invitational last fall.
Clemson’s best player on Sunday was senior Crawford Reeves, who had an even par 72. Reeves, who was Clemson’s non-counter with a 78 on Saturday, came back with five birdies on Sunday. He made birdie on the 18th hole on Sunday to reach even par for the third time this year.
Freshmen Stephen Behr and Cody Proveaux both had rounds of 73 on Sunday and both finished in a tie for 15th in the field of 78 golfers. Both also had 74s in the first round to finish at three over par 147 for the 36 holes. Proveaux had 15 straight pars to end his round on Saturday, then birdied the first two holes on Sunday. But, he made his only double bogey of the tournament on the par five third hole. He played the last 15 holes in one over par to finish with a 73. Behr had two birdies and three bogeys on Sunday.
Sophomore Billy Kennerly had a one over par 73 as well on Sunday, as he also had two birdies and three bogeys. He finished at 149 for the tournament, good enough for 22nd place.
