Baseball makes 1st appearance in Top 25 poll

by -

DURHAM, N.C.—North Carolina swept Maryland to extend its run at No. 1 in the Baseball America College Top 25 rankings to nine straight weeks, dating back to the preseason.

The top six teams all held their ground from last week, with No. 2 Vanderbilt and No. 3 Louisiana State registering loud weeks of their own. The Commodores, who have stayed at No. 2 every week except one, swept then-No. 17 Mississippi on the road, while the Tigers swept then-No. 7 Kentucky in a matchup top-10 teams. For being on the wrong end of those sweeps, Kentucky dropped to No. 13 and Mississippi to No. 23.

The back end of the rankings have been a revolving door much of the season, and that continued this week with four more teams joining the rankings. North Carolina State (No. 19) and Mississippi State (No. 21) both returned to the rankings after falling out previously, while Clemson (No. 22) and Campbell (No. 25) make their first Top 25 appearances of the season. For Campbell, it’s the school’s first Top 25 appearance in history as the Camels are off to a 28-5 start.

The Southeastern Conference leads all conferences with seven ranked teams this week, including four of the top 11. The Atlantic Coast Conference is next with six ranked teams, followed by the Pacific-12 with four. The Big East and Conference USA (two apiece) are the only other conferences with multiple ranked teams.

The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of April 7 and do not include ties.
