FROM STAFF REPORTS

Two players bidding to be South Carolina’s top college prospect for next year will be going head-to-head against each other when Spring Valley plays at North Augusta at 8 p.m. Friday.

Spring Valley is led by junior QB B.J. Phillips (6-6, 246), who will not only contend for state honors but also national recognition. He has already attracted enormous interest from most of the country’s top programs.

“Phillips is very deserving of all the acclaim … this is game where you look back in 10 or 20 years and say ‘Wow, I had the chance to play against this guy in high school’” North Augusta coach Joe Long said. “Our fans are excited about seeing this young man in action.”

Meanwhile, North Augusta LB Marcus Jackson (6-0, 200, 4.57) caught the eye of college scouts last spring when they stopped by the school to look at teammate C.J. Byrd. Jackson has kept the attention with a stellar start to his junior season. Jackson had two sacks and a 17-yard fumble return for a touchdown in Monday’s win over Lower Richland.

“I’ve told people all along that it won’t be a surprise if Marcus ends up with more offers than me,” said Byrd, who currently counts 33 offers. “Marcus will be the first to tell you he has lot of areas he can improve in, but he excels in two areas: he can run and he will hit you.”

Jackson has already been invited and attended colleges games this year at UGA and South Carolina and has trips planned to Florida State (this Saturday), Clemson and Virginia Tech.

“I don’t have any favorite colleges because I haven’t really thought about it,” Jackson said. “My focus right now is on North Augusta football. Coach Long said all of that other stuff (recruiting) will take care of itself later on.”
