After viewing the spring game, do you believe any more freshmen will have the chance to play?

The spring game did nothing to alter my opinion of what freshmen will play. Quentez Ruffin, Jamarcus Grant, Thomas Austin, Cory Lambert all will have a chance to play right away on the offensive line. The best two incoming receivers will avoid redshirts. The staff feels that they had five receivers really establish themselves this spring, and they would like to see two more emerge. Early forecast says TJ Williams and Rendrick Taylor avoid redshirts, but no combination of the four would totally shock me. Ramon McElrathbey will have an opportunity to compete for a spot at cornerback. In my opinion, Clemson is still looking for that fourth cornerback that you feel comfortable throwing in the fire. Antonio Clay and Josh Miller also will have a chance to get on the field. James Davis is going to play that is a safe bet as long as he is healthy. Demerick Chancellor may be the wild card of this class right now. Chancellor has great speed and versatility, and he may really surprise some people this fall.

How did you feel the position changes worked out this spring?

CJ Gaddis looks very comfortable at the cat safety. He cannot afford to pout either, because Roy Walker and Michael Hamlin are coming on strong and both can play either safety position. Courtney Vincent played well at bandit, but he is probably better suited at linebacker. He can be a very effective player at bandit, but he has star potential at linebacker. Rashaad Jackson looks to be a solid back up for Charles Bennett. Anthony Waters is going to have a very big season playing the mike, if he keeps doing what he is doing. Roman Fry is capable of playing center, but he is needed to start at left guard right now, still for me depth at center is a major concern.

Early predictions for 2005?

Man it is already that time again. Obviously, I could sugar coat here and talk about how tough the schedule is, etc. I'll cut right to the chase. Texas A&M is a better team heading into the fall. I watched Miami's spring game, and the basically looked like the same football team Clemson beat in the Orange bowl, but without a really good playmaker at running back. Boston College will be a four quarter war. Clemson has not played well at NC State or Wake Forest, and realistically you have to expect them to drop at least one of those two. If FSU finds a quarterback, they have the talent to compete for a National Championship, but that has been the saying the last three years. I am in between 8-3 and 7-4 for this team, but college football is the greatest thing going and parity reigns supreme. Expect another wild and crazy ride in 2005.
