Wiggins

The big news from yesterday's scrimmage was the season-ending knee injury to Korrin WigginsKorrin Wiggins

. This is a blow to the defense. Wiggins has been a terrific player who has been very productive. He has been a ball hawk who has created turnovers and made big plays.

However, this is not a deal breaker for the defense. The Tigers have recruited well, and there are several talented alternatives to Wiggins.

Clemson plays a combination of several packages on defense. When they go with the SAM linebacker Travis BlanksTravis Blanks

will be the main contributors. Blanks looks 100% healthy, and O'Daniel looks like a rising star.

When the Tigers go to more of their nickel package, options are available. Safeties like Jadar JohnsonJadar Johnson

closer to the line of scrimmage as well. One player that may have to take on a bigger role is true freshman, Van SmithVan Smith

. I like what he has shown early this spring and in fall camp.

If the Tigers want to go to more of a coverage package in the nickel and dime packages, Mark FieldsMark Fields

may see more of an opportunity as well.

If this was last season, the injury to Wiggins would have been a much bigger deal. Blanks was still out with his knee issues. O'Daniel was a red-shirt freshman who hadn't played yet. Green was moving over from wide receiver and hadn't played any on defense. Gibson was a true freshman that wasn't ready to play. Smith and Fields obviously were not even on campus yet.

If you want to look at another positive, it is the fact that the injury happened this early in camp. From Wiggins' standpoint, it gives him a full year to recover. From a team standpoint, it gives the staff time to try out options on the practice field and get other guys ready for their roles in the pre-season rather than having to adjust in the middle of a game or the middle of the season.

There is one more piece of positive news to Wiggins' injury. He played as a true freshman, so he will be able to red-shirt this season and have two years to play two starting in 2016.

It is never good news to lose a very good player in pre-season camp, but the negative news can be minimized through good depth at his position.
