The New ACC

Yesterday the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Clemson will play Notre Dame four times between the 2015 and 2023 seasons.

Notre Dame comes to Clemson next season on October 3. The Tigers will travel to South Bend for games in Notre Dame Stadium in 2020 and 2022. Notre Dame will then return to Clemson in 2023.

Next year’s contest will be the first appearance for the Fighting Irish at Memorial Stadium since 1977 when a pair of top 15 football teams met in Death Valley. When Clemson goes to Notre Dame in 2020 it will be Clemson’s first appearance in South Bend since 1979. That year Clemson won by a 16-10 score.

I usually don't get all excited about something that won't happen for another six years but this one is different. First, it's Notre Dame, and let's face it the Irish still are a big deal in college football. Second, at least they care about football, which is refreshing considering other teams on future schedules.

This past weekend I went to Boston four days. Outside of the game on Saturday, I didn't see one Boston College t-shirt or sweatshirt. We toured Boston all day Friday and I had on a Clemson shirt. I had a few "Go Tigers!" comments but nothing about Boston College. Not one person mentioned Boston College.

They are crazy about the Red Sox. They love the Celtics, Patriots and Bruins but no one cares about Boston College and its almost boring to go to a road venue and not have any banter with the opposing fans.

I don't like the membership affiliation with the northern schools. I have nothing in common with fans from Syracuse, Boston College or Pittsburgh, but this is not a north versus south thing. This is a football thing.

In the south, fans at Duke, Wake Forest, Miami and Virginia don't really care either. So again, this has nothing to do with the Mason-Dixon line. I would be excited to have a series with Penn State or Michigan or Ohio State. I just want to play someone who actually cares about football. Notre Dame cares.

At least when you go to Tallahassee you get interest. Virginia Tech is a nub of the program it used to be but they still care in Blacksburg. NC State is terrible but trips to Raleigh are fun because they know the game there and they still care.

It was refreshing to see Louisville fans get to Clemson this year and I am looking forward to going to Louisville next year. It appears to me that they really care about football there too.

Heck, even the years where North Carolina and Georgia Tech are good, their fans care a little bit.

I understand the ACC expansion. I know the league is loaded in basketball, but we are a football school and this week's game with Syracuse has no feel of a rivalry.

I love going to the opponents' websites. I love keeping up with their recruiting and what the fans are saying about their program or this week's game. However, I don't even know what Syracuse's fan sites are. Have anyone had any for dialogue with a Syracuse fan this week?

Saturday will be a blast. It's homecoming at Clemson. The fraternities are building the floats on Bowman Field. The weather should be spectacular. The tailgating should be as good as ever and I can't wait to have another incredible weekend. But it sure would be nice if we had an opponent coming to town that would bring more fans than players.
