Stoudt
Clemson has had some success with first year senior starters at quarterback in my lifetime. In 1979, Billy Lott took over for Heisman trophy candidate Steve Fuller and Lott played well in leading the Tigers to an 8-4 season and a win over Notre Dame.
In 1989, Chris Morocco took over for four year starter Rodney Williams and led the Tigers to a 10-2 mark and historic wins over Florida State and South Carolina. More recently Will Proctor and led the Tigers to their first win in Tallahassee since 1989.

and like the past three first time senior starters, much will be expected of him to continue the success built before him.
What We Know About Stoudt
Stoudt has been an extremely accurate passer in his first three seasons. As a freshman he completed 12 of 21 passes for 115 yards. His sophomore numbers improved to 27 of 39 for 212 yards for three touchdowns and one interception. Last season he went 47 of 59 for 415 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions.
We have seen Stoudt have terrific games like his 19 of 20 performance for 143 yards and three touchdowns last season against South Carolina State. He followed that up the next week when he went 10 of 11 for 90 yards and another score against Wake Forest.
We know Stoudt's style is different than Boyd's. Boyd was the most aggressive quarterback I can remember at Clemson. He would rather make a play and preferred to do it vertically. Stoudt does not have Boyd's arm strength or his accuracy downfield but he is much better at checking down and taking what the defense gives you. The staff preached to Boyd that you can't go broke by making a profit. Stoudt will take the small gains and I doubt will force the ball as often as Boyd.
Stoudt is also a little better athlete than some may think. He is not just a pocket passer. I think we will see Stoudt make some plays with his feet this season.
What We Don't Know About Stoudt
Cole Stoudt will make his first start in Athens. The last time he started a football game was in high school. Can he lead this football team?
Boyd was terrific in short yardage. He was a warrior that stuck his nose up in there and gained the toughest yards. Can Stoudt be a weapon in short yardage situations?
Boyd played well on the big stage. Clemson fans saw heroic efforts from Boyd against LSU and Ohio State in the last two bowl games. Stoudt played a little against FSU last season going five of eight for 47 yards but he has not taken meaningful snaps in the big games against opponents like Georgia, FSU and South Carolina.
Stoudt has seen mop up duty against inferior opponents.
Stoudt's only truly significant action came as a freshman against Boston College. That was the only game where he played with the game still in question. In that contest he played well. Stoudt went six of 10 for 37 yards and helped the Tigers put away the game. Boston College had cut the Tigers' lead to 26-14 when Boyd went down with a hip injury. Stoudt led the Tigers to a touchdown and a field goal to put the Eagles away.
Summary
In summary, I like Stoudt and think he will have a fine senior campaign. I doubt he breaks a ton of records and he will not have the luxury Boyd had of a great wide receiver corps. However, he does have a great defense and I can see Stoudt as a good game manager. The staff will give him the best shot at success and I think Stoudt takes advantage of it.
This team has several bigger questions than quarterback play entering fall camp.
