Star Ratings-Offense

by - Radio Host -

Like most of you, I don't think the star system used by recruiting websites is the best criteria to use in judging a football team.  Player development and scheme also have a lot to do with a team’s success.  However, a few of our readers asked that I break down Georgia players and share how many stars they had coming out of high school.  I decided to include both Clemson and Georgia for you to use as a reference point.  I have also included some notes for each position.

Today we look at the offenses and tomorrow I will look at the defenses.  Again, the star system is not the only criteria that should be used to evaluate, but below is how many stars each player had on the depth charts released Monday according to Rivals.com:

Quarterbacks

Georgia

Aaron Murray 4

Hutson Mason 3

Notes:This is a pretty even battle on paper.  These are two of the nation's best quarterbacks.  In hindsight, I think Rivals.com hit on both of these quarterbacks with their four star ranking.  I can't give a decided edge to either quarterback heading into this one.  I would think the Georgia staff would not trade Murray for Boyd and the Clemson staff would not trade Boyd for Murray.

Running Backs

Georgia

Todd Gurley 4

Keith Marshall 4

Notes:This is where the star system is misleading.  There is a big difference in Georgia's backs and Clemson's even though all four backs were four stars.  There is not a college coach in America that would say this race is even.  Georgia's sophomore duo is the best in America, while Clemson's tandem is unproven.

Georgia

Chris Conley 3

Michael Bennett 3

Juston Scott-Wesley 4

Notes:The star system points out what I believe to be true.  Clemson has an advantage here.  Georgia's wide outs are good, but Clemson has as good of a receiving corps as there is in the country.  Watkins, Peake and Bryant are NFL talents.

Notes:This is perhaps Georgia's biggest advantage on offense.  Both of the Bulldog tight ends are headed for the NFL and at this point I can't see Clemson's getting there.  Jordan LeggettJordan Leggett

Dallas Lee 4

Notes:The offensive lines are close.  Georgia may have a slight advantage here, but both offensive lines should be considered strengths.  Clemson has four returning starters while Georgia has all five starters back, and both have built solid depth.
