Things have certainly changed now that there is the early signing day for football because it seems that the first Wednesday in February is just another day but still an important day for football coaches, recruits and fans. I was amazed at the news that some of the Tiger juniors decided to return this year and those announcements were just as important as the announcements of signings. You always do a great job with numbers and I wonder where Clemson is with scholarships now that current players have announced their decisions and February 7 is at hand. Thanks.

With a Jabril Robinson announcing his transfer Monday, I have the Tigers with 83 scholarship players, but that number includes former walk-ons Ty Thomason and Kyle Cote. Without those two one-year scholarships the number goes to 81 which would give them four more for this year. Anything under 85 will go to former walk-ons like Thomason and Cote.

Why was our OL so inept against Alabama in the playoff game does Robbie Caldwell share some blame in this?

I think several things happened in New Orleans. First, Alabama played extremely well. Second, Nick Saban had a month to prepare. Third, Clemson was limited in the downfield passing game, and Bama attacked the line of scrimmage as a result. Without a downfield threat, it’s is extremely difficult to run the ball. The NFL shows us that as well. Finally, Clemson’s two turnovers led directly to Alabama scores, and that ended the game. I think every Clemson coach would take more than their fair share of the blame, but Saban and the national champions deserve a ton of credit too.

I have not seen anything related to the new deduction rules and if or how university athletic departments are going to adjust to the 2018 tax reform bill. Have you heard anything from IPTAY sources?

I have read several articles quoting athletic directors and college booster club representatives. They all expect the new law to affect fundraising. It seems to be the consensus that no one knows the exact effect and thus no one knows exactly how to adjust. I think some will take some proactive measures, but most will have much better idea in year two. In short, the uncertainties of the new law have most unsure how big of an effect it will have and thus have a hard time planning.
