Mickey, I understand Tigernet is focused on football, basketball and baseball but you are a notable golfer and a knowledgeable Clemson insider and I would like your input on the recent results of the Director's Cup for the past year. Clearly over the years, Clemson has been a football school and is now a national football power. Clemson also has a history of being a golf and men's soccer power and from time to time, the baseball team turns heads but how about the overall performance of the entire sports department? We used to hear much about the so called "Olympic Sports" but to me it appears the records in those sports are not a big deal at Clemson and the teams are just part of the school because honestly, they are required to have a certain number of men's and women's programs to meet federal and NCAA requirements. What is your take on the overall athletic program at Clemson? Thanks, Andy Andy, I don’t put any stock in the Directors Cup. Clemson doesn’t field enough sports to compete in that competition. I don’t think each sport is equal in importance. Denver’s skiing title isn’t as valuable as Alabama’s football championship. Clemson doesn’t field men’s volleyball, beach volleyball, equestrian, etc. I am excited about softball though. The only sport that I know could do better is women’s basketball and I think they have hired an excellent coach, so hopefully, that will turn around soon. I enjoy keeping up with the Olympic sports and want them all to do well. Volleyball was a mess, but I like the new coach and am hopeful they turn the program around. However, volleyball in other parts of the country is better, and Clemson is at a disadvantage geographically in that sport. Men’s and women’s golf are in good shape and getting better. The track programs are being rebuilt. The new tennis facilities will help both programs. The men’s program has shown improvement. Track suffered a setback but seems like it is rebuilding. Men’s basketball had a great year. I think baseball is in good shape. In summary, I think Clemson does fairly well in the sports it competes in. Mickey, Its the offseason and I miss more of your columns on Tigernet. I am ready to get this season kicked off! All the talk this off season (aside from QB) has been about how great the D-Line is. I believe they can be great, maybe the greatest of all time. I would love to see a comparison of this line to the great ones of the 1980s. Clemson has a rich history of D-Line and comparisons of these boys to the Perry brothers, Devane, Stuckey, Hammond, etc., would be a fun read. Those boys could shut down the best of the best running games in an era of great running backs. Might be a fun topic for a hot summer month before camp starts and we start getting some real information! Thanks for what you do! 87Tiger! 87Tiger, Thanks for the kind words. Clemson has had some incredible defensive linemen in my lifetime. The late 1970s and 1980s gave us some of the best defensive lines in America. We have been lucky to watch Bowers, Beasley, Branch, Lawson, the Perry brothers, Adams, Stuckey, Bryant, Robinson, Bodine, Jarrett, Watkins, Thompson, Jenkins, Washington, Eason, McGlockton, Buckner, Hammond, McCullough, Benish, Pryce and so many more. However, I would put this line up against any. This unit could see more high draft picks than any class we have ever seen here. This unit might be the best we may ever see here, but again the best is yet to come. Prayer List The prayer list is a medium for our community to recognize those that are in need.
