Oklahoma Offense

Oklahoma Offense

Oklahoma enters the Orange Bowl with one of the nation's top offenses, but it was an October loss that turned the offense around.

The Sooners have scored at least 41 points in nine of their 12 games. They average 45.8 points per game which ranked third in the nation. They average 542.9 yards per game which is eighth in the country. Oklahoma averages 235 yards rushing a game which is 15th in the country. They average 307 yards a game through the air which ranks 19th in the country.

Lincoln Riley is in his first season as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma after a successful tenure at East Carolina. Riley won the Frank Broyles Award given to the nation's top assistant coach.

The key to Oklahoma's offense is their incredible balance. The Sooners make it extremely difficult to defend both the run and the pass. Their scheme is advanced, but their personnel make it work.

Baker Mayfield has had a record breaking year. The Texas Tech transfer has completed 243 of 354 passes for 3,389 yards and 35 touchdowns with only five interceptions. He is also dangerous moving around in the pocket and has run for 420 yards and seven touchdowns. Mayfield was the Big 12 offensive player of the year.

The Sooners have a pair of extremely talented running backs in Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon. Perine has 211 carries for 1,291 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. Mixon has 110 carries for 749 yards and seven rushing touchdowns.

All-Big 12 wide out Sterling Shepard has 79 receptions for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns while wide receiver Dede Westbrook was the Big 12 offensive newcomer of the year. He had 42 catches for 674 yards and four scores

Tight end Mark Andrews had a terrific freshman season and was a second-team All-Big 12 selection. He had 17 receptions for 286 yards and six touchdowns. The offensive line is led by two first-team All-Big 12 performers in Ty Darlington and Nila Kasitah.

Oklahoma was good on offense but became one of the nation's best after their loss to Texas. The Sooners changed the offense and made a commitment to run the football following their only loss. Following the loss, OU rushed for 232 yards against Kansas State, 405 yards against Texas Tech, 265 against Kansas, 279 versus Iowa State, 241 against Baylor, 333 against TCU, and 344 yards against Oklahoma State.

These two teams are spread offenses that use hurry-up, no-huddle and feature All-Americans at quarterbacks and frisbee catching dogs at wide receiver. However, these two teams are committed to the run and in my opinion, the team that runs the ball better will win this game.
