A New Identity

threw six touchdown passes against North Carolina, I wrote Clemson's identity had changed.  The Tigers went from a hurry-up-no-huddle running attack that also featured some play action passing game to a vertical passing offense.

Now that Watson is out for a few weeks, Clemson's offensive identity will have to change again. How will the offense change?

The first mission should be to regain confidence.  With Watson in the game the offense the players looked confident.  They looked like they believed in their freshman superstar.  But Watson will not play Saturday and the offense will need to find that confidence again.  Hopefully they can build off of two nice drives last week.  The staff and players screwed up the end of the first half but there were some positives coming out of that drive.  Also, Clemson drove the ball for a field goal on its final drive of the game.  This drive featured freshman Adam ChoiceAdam Choice

in the running game and maybe the line and Choice can build off of that success.

does not have the arm strength or downfield accuracy, so Clemson will not feature the aggressive downfield passing game.  Instead, Stoudt will most likely throw more underneath routes and check downs.

One of the keys to the passing game will be Stoudt's ability to avoid a sack.  So far, this has been a big weakness.  He does not have the natural feel in the pocket and has been sacked too often.

Another key will be the running game.  Stoudt needs a strong running game to help support his effort.  Clemson will have to run the ball more effectively now that Watson is out.  Perhaps the staff should use the Wildcat formation in an attempt to aid the running game.  Clemson used the formation under offensive coordinator Chad MorrisChad Morris

was here.  Maybe the Tigers will incorporate more Wildcat starting this week.

Finally, maybe Clemson could look at getting away from the fast pace offense.  The offense has not been going at an accelerated fast pace any way but maybe they can slow it down even more.  This would shorten the game and play to the Tigers' strength which is now the defense.  Maybe Clemson can go in and try to win a low scoring field position game by depending on the defense and slowing it down on offense.

With Watson I would have confidence this team would win out and finish the regular season at 10-2.  Without Watson for a few weeks, I am no where near as confident.  The outlook has changed.  Maybe the offense will have to change as well.
