Nation's Top Ranked Defense

When Boston College comes to Clemson this weekend it will bring the nation's top-ranked defense. The defensive stats are simply amazing.

In the opener against Maine, BC allowed just seven yards rushing and 84 yards passing for a total of 91 yards. The Eagles held Maine to 3 points in the 24-3 win. The Black Bears had just eight first downs.

The next week Boston College dominated Howard and turned out an incredible performance. Howard managed just two first downs and 11 yards. Howard had seven yards passing and four yards rushing.

In their first true test, Boston College gave up an opening drive touchdown to Florida State. However, the defense shut down the Seminoles the rest of the game except for a fumble return for a touchdown by the FSU defense. In the game, the Seminoles had only 217 yards with 98 on the ground and 119 through the air.

Boston College rebounded the next week with a win over Northern Illinois where the defense held the Huskies to 153 yards with 72 rushing and 81 passing. Northern Illinois had only ten first downs.

The past two weeks Boston College has dropped games to Duke and Wake Forest, but the defense has been dominant. Duke scored nine in a win with 33 yards rushing and 195 passing. Wake won 3-0 with only five first downs and 33 yards rushing and 109 yards passing.

Boston College leads the nation in total defense, passing defense and rushing defense. The Eagles allow only 146 yards per game including 98 passing per game and 43 yards rushing per contest.

The Eagles are second in the country in scoring defense giving up just 7.2 points per game. They are second in the country in third-down conversions giving up conversions just 19% of the time. They are fifth in red zone defense.

The amazing part of these numbers is the fact that BC is so bad on offense that the defense is often put in bad field position. The Eagles are 111th in the country in scoring offense, 118th in total offense and 123rd in passing offense.

So Clemson will face a big test on offense this week. Last week the Tigers got the offense rolling with a balanced attack, but that was against a poor defense in Georgia Tech. This week the Tigers will have their work cut out for them.

I believe Clemson's defense will dominate and play with a chip on its shoulder again. The defense should allow Clemson's offense good field position and Clemson's skill should be the difference in the game Saturday night.
