Hoping I Was Wrong
I keep hoping I am wrong about Clemson baseball.
I lost confidence in the program a long time ago but hoped I was wrong. The last two years I was convinced I was wrong because I liked the signees of the last three classes.
Last season I thought Clemson had turned the corner and the program was back to the high standards I expect. However, a devastating loss to North Carolina in the ACC tournament helped lead to a crumbling finish to the season once again.
This year I was watching the Clemson-South Carolina game on the Friday night where Clemson blew a big lead. My friend who is not from the South and is not a college baseball fan said, "That's it. You know South Carolina will sweep Clemson now."
I didn't want to believe him but I knew what was coming, even though I wanted to be wrong.
I wanted to be wrong in the season opener when Eastern Michigan beat Clemson. The optimists said that Eastern Michigan was a very good team. Now they are 17-32 overall and 4-19 in the MAC.
I wanted to believe that Western Carolina was a very good team when the Catamounts embarrassed Clemson in March, but I am not sure that is the case.
Time and time again I wanted to be wrong. I wanted to wrong when I had doubts about the trip to Wake Forest. I knew a sweep would be tough.
I wanted to be wrong about my apprehension heading into the FSU series, but the Seminoles beat Clemson two of three. I knew Virginia was just better than Clemson but I wanted to be wrong.
The three series that I really wanted to be wrong about were NC State, Miami and Notre Dame. State is 11-15 in the ACC. Miami swept Clemson at home and Notre Dame is now just 6-21 in the league after beating Clemson two games this weekend.
As an optimistic fan I say to myself that this is the weekend Clemson will get its act together and start a long winning streak. But almost every weekend I know deep down inside that this will be another disappointment.
Now with just one week left in the regular season maybe it’s time to just admit that this team is not very good. Good teams field routine ground balls and make routine throws. Good teams get timely hits. Good teams have pitching depth. Good teams compete against other good teams and dominate bad teams. This Clemson team does none of that.

a 3-0 lead in the top of the first only to see Erwin and five other Clemson pitchers give up the next 11 runs. Friday night Clemson managed just four hits.
So the Tigers enter the final week of the regular season at 31-21 overall. Their RPI is 46th, which is behind Columbia, Georgia, Tennessee, Bryant, Mercer, Old Dominion, Liberty and Indiana State.
Since that I can admit this is not a good baseball team, I now ask: Will the Tigers make the NCAA tournament?
