fan. I became a fan when I first saw him play his senior season in high school with a torn ACL. I was amazed at his arm in the Army All-American game and loved his toughness.
I have grown into a bigger fan since he arrived at Clemson. Tajh has been a great ambassador for Clemson. He has been one of the best teammates any Clemson player could ever ask for. Off of the field he has been a terrific leader. On the field the records he hasn't broken so far will soon fall.
Yesterday I read some comments by Tajh that lead me to this blog today. Tajh talked about how much pressure he puts on himself. It is obviously working. Like many other great athletes, Tajh has a fear of failure and puts more pressure on himself than anyone could imagine.
Tajh came back for his senior season and had huge goals in mind. He wanted to achieve more.
But I wanted to pass along a birthday wish for Tajh. My hope is that he will enjoy this process. I just hope Tajh can at some point put less pressure on himself and free himself up to simply play the game. It sounds like that is what

A few weeks ago I met the best senior amateur golfer in the world. His name is Paul Simson. The North Carolina native has won the US Senior Amateur a couple times. He has won the the British Senior Amatuer three times. Simson is the only man to ever win the US Senior AM, the British Senior AM and the Canadian Senior AM in the same year.
Before turning 55 he was considered good amateur but is now the greatest senior amateur of all-time. I asked Mr. Simson, "What was the turning point for him?" I wanted to know how did he go from being a good amateur to being the best senior amateur ever?
His answer surprised me. He said the turning point was when he stop caring so much.
Simson said, "I realized I have a good wife, good kids, a good job and life is good to me. I also realized I was putting too much pressure on myself. As soon as I started to care less about golf, I started winning more."
Simson added, "The more carefree I play, the more championships I win."
That conversation reminded me of a book written by noted sports psychologist Bob Rotella. He tells a story about one of his clients who was struggling on the PGA Tour. On the tour you have to be in the top 125 on the money list to keep your card. Rotella’s player was 128 with three tournaments to go and his player was a basket case.
Rotella took his player on the practice green and laid out five balls six feet from the hole. He told the player that he wanted him to grind over every putt like it was the one to keep his tour card. The player made two of five.
He then took the player to another six foot putt and had him hit five putts, only this time he wanted his client to not have a care in the world. He said with every putt he wanted the player to care less and less. The player made all five.
I read Deepak Chopra from time to time. In his book “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success,” Chopra talks about accomplishing more with less effort. In fact, one of the seven laws is the Law of Least Effort. Chopra says you see this in nature. He says birds don't try to fly, they just fly. Grass doesn't try to grow, it just grows. Chopra says we can accomplish more by getting out of our own way.
So, over the next three months I hope Tajh and his teammates enjoy this process. This is supposed to be fun. Dabo is right when he says the fun is in the winning. Losing sucks and winning is where the fun is. However, we can accomplish more when we relax and remove unneeded pressure.
Big games are in front of this team. With each week the stakes will grow, but higher stakes doesn't have to mean more pressure. Relax and enjoy the process. I know a lot of us will certainly enjoy watching.
