For the first time in over 60 years, we don't know who the Clemson baseball coach will be next season. What we do know is this is a good job. In fact, in many ways it is one of the best jobs in the country. It is not the perfect job. It has its issues. But it has a lot of positives. The biggest selling point is that baseball is important at Clemson. There are only a handful of programs across the country where baseball is as important. I watched Florida win their regional last weekend and the crowd looked like a mid-week game at Clemson. If a coach wants to come to a program where they covet titles, Clemson is his job. UCLA doesn't have this. In fact, no one on the West Coast does and that is where most titles have been won. No one in the Big 10 cares about it like we do. FSU is the only place in the ACC that does. There might be three or four SEC teams that care like we do.

The facility upgrade makes this a better job now. The new building will give the new coach a much better chance at success. He will have bells and whistles that Leggett did not have.
This is a good time to take the Clemson job. Most times you don't want to follow a Hall of Famer. However, Clemson's program has been in a steady decline for several years.
When Chad Holbrook took over at South Carolina he took over for a coach that had been to three straight national title games. The new coach at Clemson doesn't have that to worry about. This is the perfect time to take over.
I am told Clemson had the third highest budget in baseball in the ACC last year. I am also told that the new coach could be paid more than any head baseball coach in the ACC. Many baseball coaches across the country fight budget issues. That won't happen at Clemson.
There are issues. The athletic director doing the hiring has taken a beating in the national baseball media. The academic common core issues haven't been resolved. The endowment issues are still there. The playing field is not totally level. But Clemson has history, tradition, an upgraded facility and a big budget. I am told by a few baseball people that I talk to that this is considered one of the best jobs in the country.
