Hill, Currie Lead Tigers to ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship |
CHAPEL HILL, NC - The Clemson men's track and field team claimed its 11th ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Belk Track at Fetzer Field on the campus of the University of North Carolina. The Tigers tallied 224 points to win the 2004 title, capturing their first team title since 2001 and setting the all-time ACC record for points scored at a conference meet. Under head coach Bob Pollock, Clemson has won nine outdoor team titles. The Tigers were event winner in five events on Saturday, as Michael Bolling, Rick Hill, Tye Hill, Adam Linkenauger and the 4x100m relay team led Clemson on day two of the championships.
Tye Hill won the 100m dash with a time of 10.52, leading four other Tigers in the finals of the event. Airese Currie placed third in 10.57 to earn all-conference honors, Larry Griffin was fourth in 10.63, Ronald Richards placed sixth with a time of 10.72 and George Kitchens finished eighth (10.91). Ronald Richards earned All-ACC accolades in the 200m, finishing second with a time of 21.16. Tye Hill and Larry Griffin also scored for the Tigers, finishing fifth and seventh with times of 21.42 and 21.59, respectively. Lydell Perry led four Tigers in the 110m hurdles, finishing second with a time of 14.01. Roy Cheney was fourth with a time of 14.12, Brent Hobbs finished sixth in 14.64 and Rick Hill placed seventh with a time of 14.66. Clemson took first and third through sixth place in the 400m hurdles. Michael Bolling won the event with a time of 51.61 to become only the second Tiger to capture that event, and Scott Kautz also earned All-ACC honors with a third-place finish and time of 52.16. Roy Cheney finished fourth in 52.29 and Lydell Perry clocked a 53.30 to place fifth. Rashad Gardner ran a 53.29 to place sixth. Derrick Wyatt scored for the Tigers in the 1500m, finishing sixth with a time of 3:48.77. Derrick Wyatt finished fourth in the 5000m, crossing the line in 14:50.92 and Ryan Fenton was fifth with his time of 14:55.25. In the first track event of the day, Clemson's 4x100m relay team of Larry Griffin, Tye Hill, Ronald Richards and Airese Currie ran a season-best 39.75. Clemson's 4x400m relay team of Michael Bolling, Roy Cheney, Lydell Perry and Marquis Andrews finished second in 3:08.79 to conclude the event for the men. Adam Linkenauger captured his second consecutive high jump title, winning the event with a mark of 7'1". Terrance McDaniel placed fourth (6'9.5") and Ben Daniels scored with a sixth-place finish (6'8.25"). Jason Bell cleared 6'4" in the event. Jason Bell led the Tigers in the triple jump, finishing fourth with a mark of 49'4.25". Terrance McDaniel and Ben Daniels were sixth and eighth for Clemson, recording marks of 48'2.5" and 47'5.25", respectively. Derek Gilson and Matt Lombardi took second and third in the shot put. Gilson recorded a mark of 55'7.75" and Lombardi threw 53'10.25". In the hammer throw, Danny Alge led the Tigers with a fourth-place finish and mark of 182'1", while Derek Gilson finished ninth with a throw of 158'0". Clemson swept the top three spots in the decathlon, as Rick Hill captured his second ACC decathlon title with 7300 points. Brent Hobbs took second place with 7180 points and Ryan Hunter was third with 6626 points. Hill and Hobbs provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships, surpassing the 7000-point qualifying standard. Brent Hobbs won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.47 and Rick Hill clocked a 14.75, while Ryan Hunter finished in 15.92. Hobbs also won the discus throw with a mark of 136'3" and Hunter finished second in the event with a throw of 134'1". Hill recorded a mark of 129'5" to finish third. Hunter cleared 15'9" in the pole vault to claim the event, Hill posted a mark of 15'1" and Hobbs cleared 13'1.5". Hunter was second in the javelin throw with a mark of 160'0", Hobbs posted a mark of 152'0" and Hill threw 147'4". In the final event of the decathlon, the 1500m, Hill finished second with a time of 4:34.67, Hobbs clocked a 5:15.32 and Hunter crossed the finish line in 5:30.76. Team Results 1.
