Hill, Currie Compete in 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships

SACRAMENTO, CA - The Clemson men's track and field team opened
competition at the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships on
Wednesday. George Kitchens and Itay Magidi led the Tigers on the
first day of competition, advancing to the finals of the long jump
and 3,000m steeplechase, respectively. Airese Currie, Ryan Lewis and
the 4x100m relay team also competed in preliminary events on
Wednesday, while Rick Hill completed day one of the decathlon.


Kitchens recorded a mark of 25'1.75" in the qualifying round of the
long jump, to advance to Friday's finals. In the preliminaries of the
3,000m steeplechase, Magidi posted a time of 8:41.67, also advancing
to the finals to be run on Friday.


In the 100m dash, an injured Currie did not qualify for the
semifinals after clocking a 10.88 in the preliminary round. The
Tigers' 4x100m relay team of Larry Griffin, Tye Hill, Ronald Richards
and Jacey Harper ran a time of 39.69 in the preliminaries of that
event. The 400m team was edged for a berth in the finals by a mere
four-hundredths of one second.


In the pole vault qualifying, Lewis tied for 16th with a clearance of
16'4.75" on his first attempt. Only 15 vaulters were accepted into
this year's finals.


Rick Hill began competition in the decathlon, finishing with 3,676
points to stand in 18th place. Hill ran an 11.24 in the 100m dash,
then posted a mark of 21'4.25" in the long jump. He threw 43'1.75" in
the shot put, and cleared 5'11.25" in the high jump. Hill clocked a
lifetime-best 48.56 in the 400m decathlon, the fourth-fastest time
run by a decathlete on Wednesday.


The NCAA Championships continue on Thursday, with the 200m
preliminaries (Currie), 4x400m relay and the final day of the
decathlon.
