Glover Fires Opening Round 67 at British Open

by -

Clemson, SC — Former Clemson All-American golfer Lucas Glover fired a five under par 67 in the first round of the British Open on Thursday. Glover stands in a tie for eighth place with Tiger Woods, among others, after the first round.

Glover’s day included seven birdies, five of which came on the back nine. The native of Greenville, SC made birdies on 3, 7, 10, 11, 13, 15 and 18th holes. He shot a 37 on the front side and a 32 on the back.

Glover’s 67 was the lowest ever by a former Tiger at the British Open. The previous best was a 68 by D.J. Trahan at the 2009 British Open at Turnberry.

Glover now has the low round by a former Tiger at the US Open, the PGA and the British Open. Glover shot a 64 in the second round of the 2009 US Open at Bethpage Black and went on to win the championship. He shot a 66 in the opening round of the 2006 PGA at Medinah and went on to finish 46th.

Overall, his 67 on Thursday was the fourth lowest round by a former Tiger in a Major. In addition to the two rounds by Glover referred to previously, Jonathan Byrd had a 66 at the 2003 US Open at Olympia Fields.

Glover is in good shape to make his fourth consecutive cut at a Major. He finished fifth at the 2009 PGA and has made the cut at the Masters and US Open so far this year. He is one of just 17 golfers to make the cut in the last three majors entering the British Open.
