Clemson Golf Team Still Ranked Number-one |
Clemson, SC-Larry Penley's Clemson golf team remains ranked
number-one in the nation in this week's college golf polls. The Tigers are ranked number-one in the Precept Division I Coach's Poll, a position Clemson has held for each of the last six polls, a period dating through the entire spring schedule. Clemson is also ranked first this week by the Sagarin/Golfweek Computer rankings. In the Precept Coach's Poll, Clemson earned 21 of the 30 first place votes. No other school had more than three first-place votes. The Tigers are ranked ahead of second-place Augusta State and third-ranked Texas. Wake Forest is ranked fourth, meaning three of the top four teams in the nation are in the Southeast. Clemson, Wake Forest and Augusta State will all compete in the NCAA East Regional at Auburn next weekend. Oklahoma State, who will play host to the NCAA National Tournament at the end of the month, is ranked fifth in the Precept poll. Clemson is first and Wake Forest is second in the Sagarin/Golfweek Computer Poll. The Tigers have a margin of 1.05 rating points. Clemson's distance between itself and Wake Forest is equal to the margin in rating points between Wake Forest and the 19th place team, Washington, an indication of Clemson's strength in the computer poll this year. Clemson has a 75-7-3 record in head to head tournament competition against the top Top 25 teams, by far the best top 25 record in the nation. Clemson is also ranked number-one by Golfweek in terms of strength of schedule. Individually, Clemson has three of the top 13 players in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Clemson is the only school in the nation with four players ranked in the top 50. Leading the way is D.J. Trahan, who is ranked second individually with 69.08 rating points. Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State holds the top spot at 68.75. Clemson sophomore Jack Ferguson is ranked seventh with a 69.81 figure, while Matt Hendrix is 13th at 70.11 Gregg Jones, who is 46th with a 72.61 ranking, gives Clemson a fourth player in the national top 50.
