CLEMSON -- Clemson University officials have been informed that two student-athletes were arrested Tuesday (Dec. 4) on felony drug charges. According to a news release issued by the S.C. Law Enforcement Division, Akil Smith, 22, of Richmond, Va., was arrested on three counts of sale of marijuana and three counts of sale of marijuana within proximity of a school. Travis Zachery, 24, of Marietta, Ga., was arrested on one count of distribution of marijuana. The arrests are the result of an undercover investigation conducted by SLED, the Pickens County Sheriff's Office, the Clemson City Police Department, and the Clemson University Police Department. The university has suspended Smith and Zachery from school pending an administrative hearing. The two have also been dismissed from the football team. "It is in the best interest of the football team and the university that Akil Smith and Travis Zachery be permanently removed from the team," said Head Football Coach Tommy Bowden.
