Woody vs. Willie: Who's Winning?

CLEMSON, SC -- Where do Woodrow Dantzler and Willie Simmons stand after Saturday’s scrimmage? Advantage Woody. Willie was nursing a sore ankle, although he said he would have played Saturday no matter how much his ankle hurt. He overthrew some open receivers and was obviously not able to plant on his back foot. He completed 12 of 29 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown.

Meanwhile, Woodrow completed 20 of 32 passes for 309 yards and four tochdowns – the most spectacular a 93-yard touchdown pass that Rod Gardner caught at the 40 after leaping over the defensive back. Gardner then ran the rest of the way untouched.

Willie’s day lacked the spectacular plays, although he did connect several times with Kevin Youngblood.
“I think I ran the offense pretty well,” said Simmons. “I just put him in position to make plays and he made them.”

Youngblood caught six passes for 142 yards and has been impressive at times during the spring. However, he’s still on the second team. He hasn’t been consistent enough, according to head coach Tommy Bowden.

“Consistency is his problem,” he said. “Like I told him, he’s got to do it Monday and do it Wednesday. He’ll catch five and drop six. He didn’t do that today. He was in a zone today. He dropped one ball. He’s a big target.”

Another Saturday, another walk-on makes an appearance on offense. Three weeks after Joe Bever appeared at quarterback, Britt Sherman showed up at running back.
Sherman is a 1999 graduate of Martinsburg High School in West Virginia. He was a running back and linebacker there and also wrestled and played baseball.

On Saturday, he ran the ball ten times for 34 yards in the late stages of the scrimmage with most of the starters and second-teamers off the field. Sherman, who is 5-feet-10-inches and 200 pounds, barreled through the defense. There were some on offense that thought he resembled Wisconson’s Ron Dayne.
