CLEMSON --

Clemson Head Coach Tommy Bowden said Monday afternoon that

freshman Charlie Whitehurst would start at quarterback for the Tigers

against North Carolina on Saturday at Chapel Hill.

It will be the second straight start for the rookie from

Duluth, GA. In his first start he led the Tigers to a 34-31 victory

at Duke. He completed 34-52 passes for 420 yards and four scores in

that game. The completion total and passing yardage total were

Clemson single game records and the touchdown pass total tied a

school record.

For his efforts this past Saturday he was named ACC Offensive

Back of the Week. He is the first Clemson offensive player to be

honored by the league this year.
