OFFENSIVE BACK
Clemson’s Charlie Whitehurst (Duluth, Ga.) completed 18-26 passes for 302 yards and four touchdowns in the Tigers' 63-17 victory over rival South Carolina. The 6-4, 206-pound quarterback also rushed six times for a career high 43 yards, giving him 345 yards of total offense. The sophomore completed his first 10 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns. Whitehurst tied his own Clemson single game touchdown pass record and tied the Clemson single season mark with 21 touchdown passes, a total Woody Dantzler also had in 2001. He played only three quarters and helped the Tigers to the most points ever scored against a Lou Holtz coached team. It was also the most points scored by the Tigers since the 82-24 victory over Wake Forest in 1981. OFFENSIVE LINE Virginia’s Heath Miller (Swords Creek, Va.) led the Cavaliers in receiving with six receptions for a career-high 110 yards and one touchdown in the Cavs' 29-17 win over Georgia Tech. The 6-5, 254-pound sophomore scored the game's first touchdown on a 10-yard play in the first quarter. The tight end also had receptions of 22, 35 and 30 yards that resulted in first downs on UVa scoring drives. Miller set an ACC record with 53 receptions by a tight end. DEFENSIVE LINE Maryland’s Randy Starks (Waldorf, Md.) recorded eight tackles (four solo) on a team-high 63 plays with a sack, a quarterback hurry and one fumble recovery in the Terrapins’ 26-24 win over NC State. Four of the 6-4, 312-pound junior’s eight tackles were stops on third down, forcing NC State to punt or attempt a field goal. The DT now has 6.5 sacks on the season, fourth-most in the ACC. Starks was key in Maryland's ability to stage a comeback as on 2nd & goal, he sacked Rivers for nine yards. On the ensuing play, he stopped T.A. McLendon at the line for no gain, forcing an NC State field goal and holding the Wolfpack lead to 14. The Terps would score on their next three possessions to win. DEFENSIVE BACK Duke’s Brendan Dewan (Austin, Texas) led the Blue Devils defense with 12 total tackles in their 30-22 win over North Carolina. The 6-2, 210-pound outside linebacker recorded one interception, a pickoff that came in the fourth quarter with North Carolina in Duke territory. The sophomore led the Duke defense that limited North Carolina to 86 rushing yards and 203 passing yards (289 total). Duke held North Carolina to just 39 total yards and one first down in the first half while building a 23-0 advantage. SPECIALIST Virginia’s Connor Hughes (Williamsburg, Va.), the most accurate kicker in the country, was perfect again in the Cavaliers’ 29-17 win over Georgia Tech. The 6-0, 178-pound placekicker tied a school record with five field goals (31, 25, 50, 30, 20 yards) to provide the margin of victory in the 29-17 win. Hughes also connected on both PATs and his 17 points are the second-highest by kicking in school history. The sophomore’s 50-yard field goal in the second quarter was his third field goal this season of 50 yards or more. He is the only kicker in Virginia history with more than one in a season. ROOKIE Duke’s Mike Schneider (Sharon, Pa.) guided Duke to a 30-22 win over North Carolina, completing 5 of 10 passes for 90 yards. The 6-3, 215 pound quarterback rushed for an additional 16 net yards. Schneider directed a Duke offense that produced season-highs of 254 rushing yards and 425 yards of total offense and engineered the Duke ball-control offense that held possession for 39:11 of the game.
