Watson back in town Sunday to spend time with Morris

The nation’s number one quarterback was in Clemson just a few short weeks ago, but felt a return trip was needed.

“I just came up for the day,” Watson told TigerNet Sunday night. “I wanted to come up and visit with Coach Morris and his son Chandler. I picked today because there was a basketball game. Chandler and me, we had a good time. I had a good time watching the basketball team. It was great game. The only disappointing thing was that Clemson lost the game.”

Football wasn’t a topic of conversation as Watson- who came with teammate Luke Maddox - and Morris just talked about basketball and the top recruit’s life off of the gridiron.

“We didn’t’ really talk about anything related to football or recruiting,” he said. “He [Morris] wanted to know how my basketball season was going. He just asked how school was going. And, he asked about my mom. We just had a conversation about the game and everything that was going on. Just different stuff. It was nothing about recruiting or anything.”

The outcome of the game wasn’t what Watson wanted, but he did leave feeling a part of the Clemson family after the student section chanted his name late in the game.

“It was great to know that the students want me to come and that they are looking forward to me playing there the next four years,” he said. “Clemson always brings the fans. I’m just excited to be a part of the Clemson family.”

“We didn’t really talk about anything,” he said. “He just wanted to know where I stood with my commitment and I told him that I was ‘All In.’ I’m solid. I’m ‘All In.’ He asked about my mom. We just had a conversation and he wanted to check in on me and see how I was doing. Nothing really about recruiting either.”

Clemson's 2014 QB commit, Deshaun Watson, was back in town for a few hours Sunday afternoon as he watched Clemson's basketball team. Why was he back in town so soon after his official visit? Is he All In? What did he talk about with offensive coordinator Chad Morris?

After his official visit to Clemson, Watson cancelled a trip to Ohio State- wasting a pre-purchased ticket- because he said he needed to stay true to Clemson.

“I didn’t really think about it when I bought the ticket,” he said. “I was just thinking that I wanted to visit. After a while, I just had to think that the stuff that I was doing to Clemson was bad. It was just one of those things that I had to do. I just decided to stay home and help my basketball team try to get a win instead of taking the trip.”

As a freshman Watson never saw this level of success in his future, but now that he has achieved it, he knows that he has to keep working in order to become the number one player in the state of Georgia next year.

“It pretty great. I just have to stay humble and keep working hard everyday and give God all of the glory,” Watson said. “Everything is happening pretty fast. I used to dream for all of these things to happen. I didn’t know it was going to happen this fast. As a freshman, I didn’t know that I would be the level of player that I am now. It’s pretty great. I just have to thank God for all of the blessings that he’s given me. I just have to keep working everyday to continue my success.”

Watson said he we will be back in Clemson for another Junior Day event on March 2nd.

As a junior, Watson completed 305-of-434 passes for 4,011 yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also ran for 1,430 yards and 24 touchdowns while leading his team to the AAAAA state championship.

During his sophomore campaign, Watson completed 229-of-337 passes for 3,221 yards and 41 touchdowns, while only throwing six interceptions. He also rushed for 1,037 yards and 16 touchdowns on 156 attempts.

As a freshman, he accounted for 2,100 yards through the air 17 touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing for 500 yards and five touchdowns.
