Sammy Watkins told TigerNet that the Sunday afternoon news of Clemson letting offensive coordinator Billy Napier go does not affect his commitment in the least.
Waktins (6-1, 180) is the No. 3-rated wide receiver prospect in the nation according to Rivals.com, and he is the 25th-best player nationally, regardless of position. He committed to Clemson in late November, and chose the Tigers over offers from Miami, Michigan, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, South Carolina, North Carolina and many others. Watkins was informed of the coaching changes Sunday night and said that he is still solid with Clemson. “It doesn’t affect me at all, because it’s a business and things happen, Watkins told TigerNet. For guys like me and Charone [Peake] and Mike [Bellamy], it doesn’t affect us at all. Sometimes you have to take the next step. As long as Coach [Brad] Scott, Coach Swinney and the receivers coach [Jeff Scott] don’t go anywhere, then I’m alright.” This season, Watkins caught 54 passes for 1,268 yards and 14 touchdowns. Watkins scored 8 of his 19 total touchdowns in the playoffs including two game winners. As a junior, Watkins caught 46 passes for 1192 yards and 14 touchdowns, and he carried the ball eight times for 103 yards and a touchdown. On defense, he had three interceptions. Watkins said he doesn’t care who the Tigers go after as offensive coordinator, as long as they like a good mix of the run and the pass. “He has to be good at mixing both the run and pass, like run it 30-40 times per game and throw it 30-40 times per game,” Watkins said. “And if I could get the ball several times a game, that would be nice, too.”
